Del 20 al 28 de mayo los mejores Equipos Nacionales de Surfing del mundo se reunirán en Biarritz a representar a sus naciones y competir por el Oro. Estas son las diez cosas que necesitas saber acerca del ISA World Surfing Games 2017:
1. Biarritz
La icónica ciudad surfista Biarritz, localizada al sur oeste de Francia, en el País Vasco francés, será la sede del ISA World Surfing Games 2017 en la pintoresca Grande Plage. Esta playa tiene olas de calidad con fondo de arena y ha sido sede de muchas competencias importantes de Surfing anteriormente, incluyendo los Campeonatos Nacionales de Francia.
La última vez que Biarritz fue sede del ISA World Surfing Games fue en 1980, cuando el legendario surfista Tom Curren fue coronado el primer Campeón Mundial Junior de la ISA.

2. Las Olimpiadas
El 3 de agosto de 2016, el Comité Olímpico Internacional votó por la inclusión del Surfing en el Programa de Deportes para los Juegos Tokio 2020. Como resultado, los Equipos Nacionales de Surfing tienen sus miradas puestas en convertirse en la primer oleada de surfistas que representarán a sus países en las Olimpiadas.
La competencia de Surfing en Tokio 2020 tendrá la participación de 20 hombres y 20 mujeres y se realizará en las olas naturales de Playa Tsurigasaki en la península Chiba.
3. Participación de países
Partiendo del crecimiento mundial del surfing impulsado por su inclusión en los Juegos Olímpicos, la edición de 2017 del ISA World Surfing Games está lista para romper récords de participación de países. En 1996 se estableció el actual récord de 36 países que llegaron a las costas de Huntington Beach, EUA, pero en Biarritz se espera que más de 45 países compitan por el Oro y representen a sus respectivas naciones.
Muchos países tendrán representación en este evento por primera vez en la historia, incluyendo a Afganistán, China, China Taipéi, Grecia, Senegal y Corea del Sur.

5. Nivel de competencia
El nivel de competencia para este evento será de clase mundial, con Francia y Brasil presentando a unos de sus mejores competidores. Para Francia participarán cuatro surfistas del Tour del Campeonato WSL, Jeremy Flores, Johanne Defay, Joan Duru, y Pauline Ado, mientras que Brasil tendrá a Ian Gouveia y a la poderosa dupla de hermanos Wiggolly y Weslley Dantas.
También destaca el Equipo de Argentina que viene con el dos veces y actual Medallista de Oro, Leandro Usuna, y Sudáfrica vendrá con Bianca Buitendag, una de sus mejores fichas de surfing femenino.

9. La misión
Reconocida por el COI como la entidad gobernante para el Surfing, la misión de la ISA es crear un mejor mundo mediante el Surfing. Esto se logra mediante campeonatos mundiales, desarrollo de membresías, programas educativos, distribución de becas y el trabajo hacia la inclusión del Surfing en los Juegos Olímpicos.

10 Things that You Need to Know about the 2017 ISA World Surfing Games
From May 20-28 the world’s best National Surfing Teams will unite in Biarritz, France to represent their nations and compete for Gold. Here are the 10 things that you need to know about the 2017 ISA World Surfing Games:
1. Biarritz
The iconic surf city of Biarritz, located in France’s south west Basque County, will host the 2017 ISA World Surfing Games at the picturesque beach of Grande Plage. Grande Plage features quality sand bottom waves and has hosted many major Surfing competitions before, including the French National Championships.
Biarritz last hosted the ISA World Surfing Games in 1980, when legendary surfer Tom Curren was crowned the first ISA Junior World Champion.
2. The Olympics
On August 3, 2016 the International Olympic Committee voted to include Surfing on the Sports Program of the Tokyo 2020 Games. As a result, the National Surfing Teams have their eyes set on becoming the first wave of surfers to represent their countries in the Olympics.
The Surfing competition at Tokyko 2020 will feature 20 men and 20 women and will take place on natural waves at Tsurigasaki Beach on the Chiba peninsula.
3. Country Participation
Stemming from the global growth of Surfing spurred by inclusion in the Olympic Games, the 2017 edition of the ISA World Surfing Games is set to break the record for country participation. The current record was set in 1996 when 36 nations graced the shores of Huntington Beach, USA, but in Biarritz more than 45 countries are expected to compete for Gold and represent their respective nations.

5. The Level of Competition
The competition level for the event is set to be world-class, with France and Brazil fielding some of the top contenders. France boasts four WSL Championship Tour surfers, Jeremy Flores, Johanne Defay, Joan Duru, and Pauline Ado, while Brazil will feature Ian Gouveia and the powerful brother tandem of Wiggolly and Weslley Dantas.
Also worth noting, Team Argentina will field the two-time and reigning Gold Medalist, Leandro Usuna, and South Africa will feature top female competitor Bianca Buitendag.

9. The Mission
Recognized by the IOC as the world governing body for Surfing, the ISA’s mission is to create a better world through Surfing. This is accomplished through annual World Championships, membership development, educational programs, scholarship distribution and working towards Surfing’s inclusion in the Olympic Games.
