10 Cosas que Necesitas Saber Acerca del ISA World SUP y Paddleboard Championship 2017

Ya está todo listo para el ISA World SUP y Paddleboard Championship 2017 que tendrá lugar del 1 al 10 de septiembre en la clásica ciudad de Copenhague, Dinamarca. Esta histórica edición del evento reunirá una vez más a los mejores atletas de SUP y Paddleboard del mundo y se espera que rompa un nuevo record de participación.

Aquí están las diez cosas a tener en cuenta acerca del evento:

1. Los Récords

Se espera que la edición del 2017 rompa todos los récords hasta la fecha en lo que a participación se refiere. Aproximadamente se reunirán en Dinamarca más de 250 atletas y hasta 40 países en la lucha por el Oro, lo que supera con creces el actual récord establecido en las ediciones anteriores de Fiji 2016 con 126 atletas o el de México 2015 y Nicaragua 2014 con 27 países.

2. La Localización

El evento tendrá lugar en dos localizaciones distintas a lo largo de Dinamarca, pudiendo apreciar las diversas bellezas y contrastes que el país ofrece. La competición dará comienzo en la cosmopolita ciudad europea de Copenhague y continuará en el pintoresco pueblo pesquero de Vorupør, situado en la costa noroeste de Dinamarca, también conocido como Cold Hawaii.

Los pintorescos canales de Dinamarca serán el escenario de las carreras de larga distancia y sprint, mientras que Vorupør será el lugar elegido para las divisiones de SUP Surfing, las carreras técnicas y los relevos.

3. Retrasmisión Online

El Campeonato Mundial será retrasmitido en directo en www.isaworlds.com desde el 1 al 10 de septiembre. En el sitio web oficial del evento se podrán encontrar resultados, fotos, videos y demás noticias en relación al campeonato.

4. El Liderazgo Global de la ISA

La ISA ha sido el organizador de los Campeonatos del Mundo de SUP y Paddleboard desde el 2012. El primer evento fue celebrado en Perú (2012, 2013), seguido de las ediciones de Nicaragua (2014), México (2015), y Fiji (2016).

A través de los programas de desarrollo, las becas a los jóvenes atletas de SUP emergentes y la promoción de los campeonatos a nivel nacional, el deporte del SUP ha experimentado un gran crecimiento gracias al papel de la ISA. Esta explosión del deporte se ve reflejada en datos como el nivel de participantes que se ha casi cuadruplicado desde su primera edición.

La ISA presentó ambos deportes, Surfing y SUP, a la Organización del Comité de Tokio 2020 para su inclusión en el Programa de Deportes Olímpicos. Tokio 2020 solo seleccionó al Surfing para ser incluido en los Juegos Olímpicos pero no el SUP. Sin embargo, el lograr que se incluyese en los Juegos Panamericanos 2019, el Mundial de Juegos de Playa 2017 y en los Juegos Central Americanos 2017, ha dado a la ISA el impulso que necesitaba para la lucha por su inclusión en las Olimpiadas de 2024.

5. Igualdad de Género

La igualdad de género se verá representada en todas las divisiones del ISA World SUP y Paddleboard Championship 2017, reflejando así el rápido crecimiento de las atletas femeninas tanto en SUP surfing como en carreras.

Cada equipo podrá contar con hasta 18 atletas divididos en las siguientes categorías:

6. El Héroe Local 

El Vicepresidente de la ISA y 3 veces Medallista de Oro en la división de Carrera Técnica, Casper Steinfath, representará una vez más a Dinamarca en las carreras de SUP Técnica y de Sprint en la lucha por llevarse el Oro delante del público local.

Steinfath  creció en la región danesa de Cold Hawaii, situada a unos cuántos kilómetros del lugar del evento, Vorupør, y seguro que sabrá hacer uso de su conocimiento local del Mar del Norte durante la competición.

8. SUP Crossing

De la colaboración entre la Federación Nacional ISA en Dinamarca, la Federación de Surf y Rafting danesa y Copencold Hawaii, sale el SUP Crossing como una festividad que celebra y promueve el SUP en Copenhague. Este evento incluye un festival de películas, música y cuatro circuitos diferentes de SUP para cada nivel de sus participantes.

El evento tendrá lugar el Viernes 1 de septiembre en Copenhague Harbor y dará comienzo a las 8 am justo antes de la Ceremonia de Apertura oficial de ISA World Championship que tendrá lugar esa misma tarde.

10. La Misión

Reconocido por el COI como el organismo oficial del Surfing y SUP, la misión de la ISA es el crear un mundo mejor a través del desarrollo de estos deportes. Esto se consigue a través de los Campeonatos Mundiales anuales donde los surfistas representan a sus países, desarrollo de membresía, programas educativos, entrega de becas, prepararse para la participación del Surf en los Juegos Olímpicos y el promover la inclusión de SUP en futuras ediciones de los Juegos.

10 Things You Need to Know about the 2017 ISA World SUP and Paddleboard Championship

The 2017 ISA World SUP and Paddleboard Championship is set to take place from September 1-10 in Denmark, marking a historic gathering of the world’s best SUP racers, SUP surfers, and Paddleboarders in an edition of the event that is set to break participation records.

Here are the ten things you need to know about the upcoming competition:

1. The Records

The 2017 edition of the event will greatly surpass the current records for country and athlete participation. Over 250 athletes from as many as 40 countries are expected to compete in Denmark, dwarfing the records of 126 athletes set at the 2016 edition in Fiji and 27 countries which was matched by the 2014 and 2015 editions in Nicaragua and Mexico, respectively.

2. The Locations

The event will take place at two locations across Denmark that contrast the different types of beauty that the country has to offer. The competition will kick off in the metropolitan, coastal port of Copenhagen, and then head to the quaint fishing village of Vorupør, located on Denmark’s northwest coast, also known as Cold Hawaii.

The picturesque canals of Copenhagen will host the Distance and Sprint Races, while Vorupør will host the SUP Surfing, Technical Races, and Team Relay Race.

3. Watch the Event Live Online

The World Championship will be streamed live on www.isaworlds.com from September 1-10. Visit the official event website for results, photos, videos and news pertaining to the competition.

Fans will also be able to watch the live webcast on the ISA’s Facebook page, International Surfing Association.

4. ISA’s Global Leadership of SUP

The ISA has been the organizer of the sole World Championship for SUP and Paddleboard since 2012. The event was first held in Peru (2012, 2013), with following editions held in Nicaragua (2014), Mexico (2015), and Fiji (2016).

Through development programs, scholarships for young SUP athletes, and promoting Championships at the national level, SUP has experienced explosive growth under the ISA’s guidance, which can be observed in the participation levels seen in the World Championship that have nearly quadrupled since its inception.

The ISA presented both Surfing and SUP to the Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee for inclusion in the Olympic Sports Program. Tokyo 2020 only elected Surfing to be included in the Games and not SUP, however achievements such as inclusion in the 2019 Pan American Games, 2019 World Beach Games, and 2017 Central American Games have added momentum to the ISA’s push for inclusion in the 2024 Olympics.

5. Gender Equality

The 2017 ISA World SUP and Paddleboard Championship will feature gender equality across all divisions, reflective of the rapid growth of women’s SUP racing and surfing.

Each team will be able to field up to 18 athletes in the following divisions:

SUP Distance Race: Men (2), Women (2)
Paddleboard Distance Race: Men (1), Women (1)
SUP Sprint Race: Men (1), Women (1)
SUP Technical Race: Men (2), Women (2)
Paddleboard Technical Race: Men (1), Women (1)

6. The Hometown Hero

ISA Vice President and 3x Technical Race Gold Medalist, Casper Steinfath, will represent Team Denmark in the Men’s SUP Technical and Sprint Races, looking to earn a Gold Medal for the local crowd.

Steinfath grew up in the Cold Hawaii region of Denmark, just a few kilometers from the event venue of Vorupør, and will be able to apply his local knowledge of the North Sea to give himself a leg up on the competition.

8. The SUP Crossing

Put on in conjunction by the ISA’s National Federation in Denmark, the Danish Surfing and Rafting Federation, and Copencold Hawaii, the SUP Crossing is a festivity to celebrate and promote the participation of SUP in Copenhagen. The festivity’s events include a film festival, music, and the main event, four different SUP courses with varying difficulty for all levels of SUP racers.

The event will take place on Friday, September 1 in Copenhagen Harbor starting at 8am, before the official Opening Ceremony of the World Championship to take place later in the afternoon.

10. The Mission

Recognized by the IOC as the world governing body for Surfing and SUP, the ISA’s mission is to create a better world through development of these sports. This is accomplished through annual World Championships for surfers representing their countries, membership development, educational programs, scholarship distribution, preparing for Surfing’s participation in the Olympic Games, and promotion of the inclusion of SUP in future editions of the Games.
