Pauline Ado de Francia repite su impresionante actuación y obtiene de nuevo el mayor puntaje total de serie por segundo día consecutivo

En el tercer día de competencia del INS ISA World Surfing Games 2016, se corrieron las primeras rondas de Repechaje, lo que dio como resultado una feroz competencia y a los primeros atletas eliminados del evento.

La ronda 1 de Repechaje tanto de Hombres como de Mujeres, se llevaron a cabo en condiciones nubladas, con el mismo swell de 2 a 3 pies en Playa Jaco, Costa Rica. 34 participantes que no lograron quedar en los dos primeros puestos de cada serie, han quedado fuera de la competencia.

La francesa Pauline Ado repitió su impresionante actuación del día dos de competencia y obtuvo el mayor puntaje de una ola individual y total de serie, entre mujeres y hombres, por segundo día consecutivo.

Ado avanzó en su serie de la Ronda 2 del Evento Principal temprano en la mañana, al conectar poderosas maniobras y sumar un total de 17.93, resaltado por una ola casi perfecta de 9.5. Ado avanzó a Ronda 3 del Evento Principal junto con Dominic Barona de Ecuador, quien también tuvo un sólido puntaje total de serie de 15.57. Leilani McGonagle (10.60) y Johanny Alfonso (5.57) de Panamá fueron enviadas a las Rondas de Repechaje, donde deberán recorrer una ruta más larga hasta la Gran Final.

El tercer día de competencia tuvo un explosivo inicio con seis series del Evento Principal de Open Mujeres.

Melanie Giunta de Perú se enfrentó cara a cara contra la costarricense Emily Gussoni en la segunda serie de la mañana. Ambas surfistas ganaron un puntaje total de serie de 11.33, sin embargo la ola individual de 6.10 puntos de Gussoni la impulsó al primer puesto y a Giunta al segundo.

Giunta comentó acerca de moverse un paso más cerca de las Finales:

“Todo mi equipo es como mi familia y nos damos apoyo unos a otros. Me motiva escucharlos gritar por mí desde la playa cuando corro una ola. Las olas están divertidas ahora, pero se van a poner más grandes para los próximos días”.

Luego de las 6 series del Evento Principal de Open Mujeres, se corrieron las rondas de Repechaje de Hombres y Mujeres.

La segunda serie de Repechaje tuvo la participación de dos pares de compañeros de equipo.

Anderson Tascón (15.07) de Colombia y Matt-Lewis Hewitt (10.90) de Nueva Zelanda avanzaron, lo que resultó en la eliminación de sus compatriotas Neo Escaler Gallego (COL) y Taylor Hutchinson (NZL).

Matt-Lewis Hewitt demostró su entusiasmo a pesar del duro camino que tiene en frente en las rondas de Repechaje:

“Las condiciones estuvieron bastante difíciles en esa serie de Repechaje, pero estoy emocionado de que lo logré. Estar en las rondas de Repechaje realmente es la ruta más larga, pero si encuentras ritmo entonces puedes continuar y pasar series”.

El Presidente de la ISA, Fernando Aguerre, quien está asistiendo a los Juegos Olímpicos debido a la votación del Comité Olímpico Internacional por la inclusión del Surfing a los Juegos Tokio 2020, comentó acerca de la acción mientras miraba la transmisión web:

“Las rondas de Repechaje nunca son fáciles, la competencia es feroz y candente. Son rondas difíciles pero no imposibles. Hemos visto a muchos de nuestros Medallistas de Oro tener un lento inicio, pero que han encontrado su ritmo en los Repechajes y han llegado a ser campeones mundiales. Los próximos días de competencia serán cruciales conforme el grupo de competidores continúa reduciéndose”.

Surfline, pronosticador oficial del evento, indica que el swell del Suroeste empezará a crecer este miércoles 9 de agosto y para el jueves 10 de agosto llegará completamente. Este swell traerá olas sólidas de 3 a 4 pies por lo que resta del periodo de competencia.

Repechage Heats Eliminate First Round of Competitors at 2016 INS ISA World Surfing Games

France’s Pauline Ado repeats impressive performance, earns highest heat total for second consecutive day

On third day of competition at the 2016 INS ISA World Surfing Games the first Repechage Rounds ran, resulting in fierce competition and the first athletes eliminated from the event.

The Men’s and Women’s Repechage Round 1 took place in overcast conditions with continued 2-3 foot swell at Playa Jacó, Costa Rica. 34 competitors that were not able to place in the top two spots of their heats were knocked out of the competition.

France’s Pauline Ado repeated her impressive performance from the second day of competition and earned the highest heat total, for any man or woman, for the second consecutive day.

Ado charged through her Main Event Round 2 heat early in the morning, connecting powerful maneuvers to obtain a heat score of 17.93 highlighted by a nearly perfect 9.5-point ride. Ado advanced into Round 3 of the Main Event along with Ecuador’s Dominic Barona, who surfed a solid heat to earn a total of 15.57. Costa Rica’s Leilani McGonagle (10.60) and Panama’s Johanny Alfonso (5.57) were relegated to the Repechage Rounds, where they will face a longer route to get to the Grand Final.

The third day of competition got off to a blistering start with 6 heats of Main Event Open Women.

Peru’s Melanie Giunta went toe to toe with the local Costa Rican Emily Gussoni in the second heat of the morning. Both surfers earned identical heat totals of 11.33, advancing into Round 3, however Gussoni’s higher single wave score of 6.10 pushed her into first place and Giunta to second.

Giunta shared her thoughts after moving one step closer to the Finals:

“My whole team is like my family and we are all supporting each other. It motivates me to hear them scream for me on the beach when I get a wave. The waves are really fun right now, but they are going to get bigger over the next few days!”

Following the 6 heats of Open Women Main Event, the Men and Women Repechage Rounds transpired.

The second Repechage heat paired up two sets of teammates. Colombia’s Anderson Tascón (15.07) and New Zealand’s Matt-Lewis Hewitt (10.90) advanced, resulting in the elimination of their fellow countrymen Neo Escaler Gallego (COL) and Taylor Hutchinson (NZL).

Matt-Lewis Hewitt expressed his optimism despite the tough path ahead of him in the Repechage Rounds:

“The conditions were quite tricky in that Repechage heat but I am stoked to have made it. Being in the Repechage is definitely taking the long route, but if you can get in a flow then you can keep going on and making heats.”

ISA President, Fernando Aguerre, who is currently in Rio attending the Olympics due to the International Olympic Committee’s recent vote to include Surfing on the Sports Program of the Tokyo 2020 Games, commented on the action while watching the webcast.

“The Repechage Rounds are never easy, the competition tends to be fierce and heated. While the Repechage Rounds are difficult, they are not impossible. We have seen many of our Gold Medalists get off to slow starts only to find their groove in the Repechage Round and go on to be World Champions. The next few days of competition will be crucial as the field of competitors continues to narrow.”

Surfline, the official forecaster, is predicting that a new Southwest swell will start to build on Wednesday, August 9, and fully materialize on Thursday, August 10. This Southwest swell will hold solid, providing 3-4 foot waves for the remainder of the contest period.
