Surf’s Up! – Celebrating International Surfing Day on June 18

Huntington Beach, CA. – Grab your surfboard and join the Surfrider Foundation Huntington/Seal Beach Chapter, Newport Beach and Long Beach Chapter in celebrating International Surfing Day Saturday, June 18, 2016, in Huntington Beach from 8 a.m. – 1 p.m. Everyone will be gathering at 6th Street and Pacific Coast Highway – North side of the pier on the sand.

An annual event that takes place on or near the 20th at the start of the Summer Solstice, International Surfing Day (ISD) was started in 2005 by Surfing Magazine and the Surfrider Foundation so that surfers from around the world can come together in celebration of this great sport and to give something back to the oceans and beaches.

“There will be surf paddle-outs, surf lessens, SUP demonstrations, yoga on the beach, surf industry displays, beach cleanups, and music,” Duke Aipa, the H/SB Chapter’s Surf Ambassador, added, “There’s no better place to celebrate ISD than Huntington Beach. I hope that people will have fun riding the boards we’ll have out to demo.”

“Part of the beauty of International Surfing Day is that people everywhere can celebrate and give back,” said H/SB Chapter Surfrider Foundation Chairman, Tony Soriano. “Whether that’s paddling out for the very first time, sneaking in a quick session with friends or picking up trash at your local beach, ISD is as big as you make it.” www.hsbsurfrider.org ISD began with just a handful of local observances in the United States and has expanded to more than 200 events in 30 countries worldwide. In 2012, ISD participants removed more than three tons of trash from our coastlines.

Since British sea captain James Cook sailed to Hawaii in 1778 and saw the Hawaiians riding the waves the world has been fascinated with surfing. Marveling at one surfer’s ability, Cook said, “I could not help concluding this man had the most supreme pleasure while he was driven so fast and so smoothly by the sea.”

Surfing has grown to a billion-dollar industry and become part of the world’s culture with surfing images, expressions, music, fashion and art integrated into the daily lives of surfers and non-surfers alike.

The Surfrider Foundation is a non-profit grassroots organization dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of our world’s oceans, waves and beaches through a powerful activist network. Founded in 1984 by a handful of visionary surfers in Malibu, California; The Surfrider Foundation now maintains over 550,000 supporters, activists and members worldwide.
