Las Semifinales de Open Mujeres están listas en el Evento Principal, 15 de 26 equipos permanecen en competencia

Portugal y Costa Rica han tomado el liderato en la tabla general de puntos de equipos en este Día 5 del INS ISA World Surfing Games 2016. Son los únicos dos equipos que tienen cinco de sus seis competidores aún en el evento.

Las Rondas del Evento Principal y de Repechaje se corrieron y las Semifinales del Evento Principal de Open Mujeres han quedado conformadas.

Con el cierre del quinto día de competencia, once equipos nacionales han sido eliminados del evento, lo que deja solamente 15 en la búsqueda de las Medallas de Oro para este esperado fin de semana de Finales.

La acción de este jueves inició con la Ronda 3 del Evento Principal de Open Mujeres, con la marea subiendo y con un aumento en el swell que dieron excelentes condiciones en Playa Jacó, Costa Rica. Esta Ronda fue destacada por el puntaje total de serie de 15.97, anotado porJustine Dupont de Francia, el puntaje más alto de hoy en la categoría femenina.

Dupont habló de su victoria:

“Estoy emocionada de avanzar en esta serie. Poco a poco he incrementado mis puntajes y mi confianza. He estado entrenando muy duro así que es grandioso ver que mi trabajo está dando frutos”.

Entrada la mañana, se hicieron seis series de la Ronda 3 de Repechaje de Open Hombres.

Dimitri Ouvre de Francia obtuvo el puntaje más alto del día y el cuarto más alto de la competencia en esta ronda, dando a Francia un aumento en su energía luego de la caída de cinco de sus competidores a las rondas de repechaje ayer miércoles. Ouvre recibió 9.17 y 8.50 puntos para un total de 17.67, con lo que avanzó a la Ronda de Repechaje 4 junto con Dylan Southworth de México (12.90). Kenta Ishikawa de Japón (10.46) y Marcelo Rodriguez (10.10) de Argentina se ubicaron en tercero y cuarto lugar, lo que resultó en la eliminación de la competencia.

El repechaje de mujeres fue el siguiente en entrar al agua, y se completaron tres series de la Ronda 3, conforme la marea empezaba a vaciar en Playa Jacó. Nagisa Tashiro (11.93) de Japón, Faye Zoetmulder (10.53) de Sudáfrica y Brittani Nicholl (13.36) de Australia llegaron al primer lugar en sus respectivas series y ahora se enfrentarán a cinco rondas de Repechaje que se colocan entre todas ellas y la Gran Final.

La Ronda de Repechaje 4 de Open Hombres cerró el día de competencia. Hiroto Arai de Japón, quien obtuvo el puntaje total de la serie más alto ayer miércoles, continuó con su excelente presentación y ganó un total de 16.60 puntos, el más alto de esta ronda.

Brett Simpson de Estados Unidos encontró su mejor forma en las rondas de Repechaje, luego de haber perdido ayer en una cerrada serie del Evento Principal. En su Ronda de Repechaje 4 tomó el primer lugar con un total de 14.83.

Simpson habló de su estrategia para avanzar en la competencia:

“Ahora que estoy en el Repechaje tengo un camino más largo, pero solamente tengo que seguir enfocado en tomar dos olas buenas. Estaba un poco decepcionado por mi serie del otro día que no alcancé avanzar, pero así es el juego. Aún tengo oportunidad”.

“Esta es mi primera vez en un ISA World Surfing Games. Es un poco angustiante porque quieres cargar con tu propio peso. Nos estamos dando apoyo entre nosotros y enfocándonos en nuestras series. La camaradería ha sido grandiosa entre nosotros”.

Fernando Aguerre, Presidente de la ISA, quien se encuentra en Río asistiendo a los Juegos Olímpicos, luego de que el pasado 3 de agosto, el Comité Olímpico Internacional votara por incluir el Surfing en el Programa Olímpico para los Juegos de 2020 en Tokio, habló luego de ver el Día 5 de la transmisión web en vivo.

“Los equipos de Portugal y de Costa Rica han dado unas presentaciones asombrosas hasta ahora, pero la competencia aún está abierta a cualquiera. Quedan aún 15 equipos con surfistas en competencia que estarán buscando darlo todo por las Medallas de Oro. Tenemos unas series cruciales y el Aloha Cup en los próximos días, lo cual mantendrá el nivel de intensidad y emoción en Playa Jacó”.

Surfline, pronosticador oficial del evento, indica que el swell de 3 a 4 pies del Suroeste continuará para el viernes 12 de agosto. Se espera que este swell se mantenga hasta el final de competencia, el domingo 14 de agosto.

Team Portugal and Costa Rica Surge into the Lead on Day 5 of 2016 INS ISA World Surfing Games

Open Women Semifinals set in the Main Event, 15 of 26 Teams remain in the competition

On Day 5 of the 2016 INS ISA World Surfing Games Team Portugal and Costa Rica surged into the lead of the overall team points standings, the only two teams that have five of their six competitors remaining in the competition.

Main Event and Repechage Rounds ran and the Open Women Semifinal heats of the Main Event were decided. After the closing of the fifth day of competition, 11 National Teams had been eliminated from the competition, leaving just 15 to vie for the Gold Medals heading into the highly anticipated final weekend of the event.

Round 3 of the Open Women Main Event kicked off the action on Thursday with a rising tide and increasing swell that made for excellent conditions at Playa Jacó, Costa Rica. The Round was highlighted by France’s Justine Dupont’s 15.97 heat total, the highest female score of the day.

Dupont expressed her thoughts after winning her heat:

“I’m stoked to get through this heat. Little by little I increased my scores and increased my confidence. I’ve been training really hard so it’s great to see my hard work paying off.”

Six heats of the Men’s Repechage Round 3 ensued in the late morning.

France’s Dimitri Ouvre notched the highest heat total of the day and fourth highest of the competition in Repechage Round 3, giving France a much needed boost of energy after seeing five of their competitors drop into the Repechage Rounds on Wednesday. Ouvre obtained two waves of 9.17 and 8.50 for a heat total of 17.67, advancing to the afternoon Repechage Round 4 along with Mexico’s Dylan Southworth(12.90). Japan’s Kenta Ishikawa (10.46) and Argentina’s Marcelo Rodriguez (10.10) respectively placed third and fourth in the heat, resulting in their elimination from the competition.

The Women’s Repechage was next in the water, completing three heats of Round 3 as the tide started to drain at Playa Jacó. Japan’sNagisa Tashiro (11.93), South Africa’s Faye Zoetmulder (10.53) and Australia’s Brittani Nicholl (13.36) all took first place in their respective heats and will now face five Repechage Rounds that stand between them and the Grand Final.

The Open Men Repechage Round 4 closed out the day of competition. Japan’s Hiroto Arai, who earned the highest heat total on Wednesday, continued his scorching performance in the Repechage Rounds and obtained a heat total of 16.60, the highest of the round.

USA’s Brett Simpson has found his form in the Repechage Rounds after losing a closely contested heat in the Main Event yesterday, taking first in his Repechage Round 4 heat with a total of 14.83.

Simpson spoke about his strategy moving forward in the competition:

“Now that I am in the Repechage Rounds I have a bit longer road, but I just have to keep focusing on getting two good waves. I was a little bummed in my heat the other day to come up short, but that’s the name of the game. I still have a chance.

“This is my first time at the ISA World Surfing Games. It’s a little nerve wracking because you want to carry your weight. We are all supporting each other and focusing on our heats. The camaraderie has been great between us.”

ISA President Fernando Aguerre, who is currently in Rio attending the Olympics due to the International Olympic Committee’s vote on August 3 to include Surfing in the Sports Program for the Tokyo 2020 Games, spoke from Rio after watching Day 5 of competition on the live webcast.

“Team Portugal and Costa Rica have put on amazing performances thus far, but the competition is still anyone’s game. There are still 15 teams with surfers in the competition that will be looking to put it all on the line for the Gold Medals. We have some crucial heats and the Aloha Cup on tap for the coming days, which will maintain the level of intensity and excitement at Playa Jacó.”

Surfline, the official forecaster, is predicting that the 3-4 foot Southwest swell will continue to hold on Friday, August 12. The swell is expected continue through the end of the contest period, until Sunday, August 14.
