Con poco más de un mes restante para el inicio del Fiji ISA World SUP and Paddleboard Championship 2016, muchos de los mejores atletas del deporte han confirmado su participación en esta anticipada edición de la competencia, y se espera que muchos más sigan su ejemplo.

Varios Medallistas de Oro de la ISA y el reconocido surfista y corredor de SUP, Kai Lenny, están entre los que han sido seleccionados para competir por sus Equipos Nacionales en el evento, el cual tendrá lugar del 12 al 20 de noviembre en la ola mundialmente famosa, Cloudbreak.

La participación de los mejores surfistas y corredores de SUP confirma aún más la prominencia e importancia de SUP entre las disciplinas claves de la ISA.

Kai Lenny se unirá al Equipo de Hawaii por primera vez en la historia de cuatro años del evento, reforzando un equipo fuerte que también incluirá al Medallista de Oro 2015 de la Carrera Técnica de SUP, Connor Baxter. Mo Freitas, Leane Darling, Zane Schweitzer y Kai Hall también aportarán su experiencia al equipo, todos habiendo ganado medallas en la edición de 2015 en Sayulita, México.

Australia, el Medallista de Oro por Equipos en los primeros tres años del evento (2012-2014), ha armado un equipo talentoso que pretenderá retomar la Medalla de Oro en Fiji. El Equipo de Australia será encabezado por la atleta con la mayor cantidad de medallas de la ISA en la historia, Jordan Mercer, quien cuenta con el récord 15 Medallas de Oro individuales y por equipos. Mercer representará a Australia en la Carrera de Distancia y Técnica de Paddleboard.

Respaldando a Mercer, el Equipo de Australia tendrá muchos atletas que han ganado Medallas de la ISA, incluyendo a Lachie Lansdown (Paddleboard), Jackson Close (SUP Surfing), Lincoln Dews (Carreras de SUP), Terrene Black (Carreras de SUP) y Shakira Westdorp (SUP Surfing).

En 2015, el Equipo de los Estados Unidos hizo historia al romper la racha de tres años del Equipo de Australia y subió a la cima del podio por primera vez. El Equipo de los Estado Unidos aún está por confirmar sus atletas, pero seguramente pretenderá seleccionar competidores que ganaron sus seis Medallas de Oro individuales y la Medalla de Oro por equipos de 2015.

Otra Medallista de Oro de la ISA que ha confirmado su participación en Fiji hasta ahora es Lina Augaitis de Canadá, quien tiene cuatro medallas de la ISA incluyendo la Medalla de Oro de 2014 de la Carrera Femenina de Distancia de SUP.

El Presidente de la ISA, Fernando Aguerre, dijo:

El Fiji ISA World SUP and Paddleboard Championship 2016 será la quinta edición del evento después de ediciones previas en Perú (2012, 2013), Nicaragua (2014) y México (2015).

El evento, el cual se ha convertido en la competencia con más rápido crecimiento en la Serie de Campeonatos Mundiales de la ISA, incluye SUP Surfing, SUP Racing, Paddleboard y la Carrera de Relevos por Equipo.

Las distintas disciplinas competirán durante el periodo del evento según el pronóstico de olas y se centrarán en torno a una de las mejores olas del mundo, Cloudbreak.

Con más de un mes restante para la inscripción de equipos, muchos equipos anunciarán sus atletas en las próximas semanas.

World-Class Talent Set to Compete at 2016 Fiji ISA World SUP and Paddleboard Championship

With just over a month remaining until the start of the 2016 Fiji ISA World SUP and Paddleboard Championship, many of the sport’s top talents have already confirmed their participation in this highly anticipated edition of the competition, with many more expected to follow suit.

Numerous ISA Gold Medalists and world-renowned SUP surfer and racer, Kai Lenny, are among those that have been selected to compete for their National Teams in the event which is set to take place from November 12-20 in Fiji’s world-renowned Cloudbreak.

The participation of world’s best SUP surfers and racers is further confirmation of growing prominence and importance of SUP amongst the ISA’s key disciplines.

Kai Lenny will join Team Hawaii for the first time in the event’s four-year history, bolstering a strong Hawaiian squad that will also feature the 2015 SUP Technical Race Gold Medalist, Connor Baxter. Mo Freitas, Leane Darling, Zane Schweitzer and Kai Hall will also add valuable experience to the team, having all won individual medals at the 2015 edition in Sayulita, Mexico.

The 3-time Team Gold Medalist, Team Australia, who won the Gold in the first three years of the event (2012-2014), has assembled a talented squad as well that will look to reclaim their Gold Medal form in Fiji. Team Australia will be led by the most decorated ISA athlete in history, Jordan Mercer, who boasts a record 15 combined individual and team ISA Gold Medals. Mercer will represent Australia in the Technical and Distance Paddleboard races.

Backing up Mercer, Team Australia is loaded with ISA Medal experience, featuring past ISA medalists Lachie Lansdown (Paddleboard), Jackson Close (SUP Surfing), Lincoln Dews (SUP Racing), Terrene Black (SUP Racing) and Shakira Westdorp (SUP Surfing).

In 2015, Team USA made history by breaking Australia’s three-year streak of dominance in the event and stood atop the podium for the first time. While Team USA is still yet to confirm their roster, it will look to return many of the athletes responsible for their six individual Gold Medals and overall Team Gold Medal from 2015.

Rounding out the past ISA Gold Medalists confirmed thus far to compete in Fiji is Canada’s Lina Augaitis, who has four ISA medals to her name including the 2014 Gold Medal in the Women’s SUP Distance Race.

“The ISA’s leadership in the development of the sport has proven to be one of the key game changers for this fast growing watersport.”

The 2016 Fiji ISA World SUP and Paddleboard Championship will be the fifth edition of the event after previous editions were held in Peru (2013, 2013), Nicaragua (2014) and Mexico (2015).

The event, which has become the fastest growing on the ISA World Championship Series, features SUP Surfing, SUP Racing, Paddleboard and a Team Relay.

The various disciplines will take placing during the event window according to the surf forecast, with the competitions to be centered around one of the world’s premiere reef breaks, Cloudbreak.

Still with over a month remaining in the team registration, many competing teams will be announcing their full rosters in the coming weeks.
