El Hawaiano Joshua Moniz #Winner, vencedor del primer Martinique Surf Pro

Este sábado 25 de abril se ha celebrado la jornada final del Martinique Surf Pro, con tres mangas llenas de suspense. Cumpliendo las expectativas, las dos semifinales y la gran final han tenido un nivel altísimo, ofreciendo imágenes impresionantes en la localidad surfera de Basse-Pointe. El hawaiano Joshua Moniz, de 18 años, se ha hecho con la victoria en esta única manga caribeña de las series clasificatorias (QS) de la World Surf League en 2015. Con unas magníficas condiciones y la presencia de un animado público, ha vencido en la ronda final al sudafricano Michael February (21 años). El peruano Miguel Tudela y el australiano Cooper Chapman, ambos de 20 años, han compartido la tercera plaza.

La primera edición de Martinique Surf Pro ha ofrecido un impresionante final en la localidad surfera de Basse-Pointe, cuyas magníficas olas son ahora conocidas por surfistas de todo el mundo. Este sábado por la mañana, cuatro surfistas estaban todavía en liza por la victoria en este nuevo evento en Martinica: Joshua Moniz, Michael February, Miguel Tudela y Cooper Chapman, todos ellos entre 18 y 21 años, que han ofrecido un gran espectáculo a todos los espectadores que han acudido a Basse-Pointe.

Emocionantes semifinales
La primera semifinal, que ha dado comienzo a las 10:30 horas, ha enfrentado al peruano Miguel Tudela y al sudafricano Michael February, en una manga de 35 minutos. Con olas que han tardado en hacer su aparición, ambos surfistas sabían que debían ser pacientes, y han logrado buenas puntuaciones, pese a la dificultad de las condiciones. A pocos segundos del final, cuando todo parecía indicar que Tudela tenía la manga en el bolsillo, Michael February ha hecho gala de una gran determinación al tomar la última ola jugándoselo todo en esta última oportunidad. Gracias a un potente aéreo, ha logrado imponerse a su rival con un corto margen. 14.80 puntos frente a 14.63 para su contrincante, Miguel Tudela, que estaba visiblemente contrariado con este inesperado final.

Los espectadores han tenido poco tiempo para recuperarse de la emoción, ya que la segunda semi-final ha comenzado casi inmediatamente. De nuevo una manga de 35 minutos ha enfrentado al australiano Cooper Chapman y al hawaiano Joshua Moniz. Era la tercera vez que ambos se enfrentaban en este Martinique Surf Pro, ya que previamente lo habían hecho en los heats de 4 competidores, durante las rondas 3 y 4. En la semifinal, Chapman y Moniz han dado lo mejor de sí mismos, logrando muy buenas puntuaciones. Una vez más, todo se decidía en los últimos segundos. Cooper Chapman tomaba la delantera en la última ola, pero Joshua Moniz le superaba en la siguiente con una puntuación de 8.47. Al finalizar, había poca diferencia de puntuaciones: 17.80 frente a 17.46 puntos. Aunque han sido eliminados antes de la final, Miguel Tudela y Cooper Chapman pueden estar satisfechos con los 1.680 puntos que ambos han ganado en las series clasificatorias.

Una final de nivel
A las 12:30 se ha celebrado la gran final del Martinique Surf Pro entre Michael February y Joshua Moniz. No ha sido sorprendente que estos excelentes surfistas hayan conseguido más de 8 puntos en varias olas. Durante los 40 minutos que ha durado la final, Moniz y February han tomado ocho olas. Con un 9.07 y un 8.87, Joshua Moniz ponía el listón muy alto. February necesitaba dos altísimas puntuaciones para superarle. Con un 8.57 y un 7.53, no ha conseguido batir el 17.94 total de su rival hawaiano. Así, Joshua Moniz se hacía con la victoria en esta primera edición de Martinique Surf Pro. Con esta primera victoria, Moniz se lleva 3.000 puntos en las series clasificatorias, una cantidad nada desdeñable. Aunque aún forma parte del Junior Tour, Moniz estaba clasificado en la 160ª posición antes de participar en este evento en Martinca. Gracias a esta victoria, escala posiciones, así como Michael February, que dejará la isla caribeña con 2.250 puntos más. Esto hará a buen seguro que ascienda de su 77ª posición en las clasificatorias de 2015.

Estaba muy nervioso en la final y estoy feliz de haber sido el vencedor. Es mi primera victoria en las QS y la primera vez que participo en un duelo uno contra uno, estoy encantado. Estoy en shock. Espero que este evento continúe porque las olas son muy divertidas y no se suelen encontrar olas así en una competición. Es increíble porque en casa ronda, los participantes perdían con puntuaciones de 16 o 17, y eso es muy raro en una competición.”

Michael February (Sudáfrica, 21 años), finalista en Martinique Surf Pro 2015: “He tenido buenas puntuaciones en la final, pero por desgracia no han sido suficiente. A estas alturas de la competición, tenías que surfear muy bien, y Joshua se ha mostrado muy consistente. La segunda posición es un buen resultado, el mejor que he tenido hasta ahora, y estoy encantado con ello. Me decía a mi mismo que los cuartos de final serían un buen resultado en cuanto a puntos, por lo que llegar a la final es fantástico. Ayer tuve un diez, y eso me da confianza.”

“Ha sido un día increíble, bastante largo, con tres rondas, y la verdad es que estoy muy agradecido y contento de haber llegado a las semis. Ahora a seguir con el mismo ritmo en las semifinales, llegar a la final y poder ganar el evento. Las olas han estado increíbles y qué más puedo pedir, ha sido un gran día. La ronda cuatro fue bastante lenta, no entraron muchas olas, pero tuve la oportunidad de agarrar una ola al final que me dio la puntuación para ir el primero y en los cuartos men to men comenzó bastante el heat, pude tomar un par de buenas olas y ponerme primero y controlar el heat hasta el final. Al final el mar me ayudó, no entraron muchas olas y pude quedarme el primero. Las olas están increíbles, es uno de los mejores eventos que he hecho hasta ahora y espero que se siga haciendo el evento y regresar acá, me encanta. El nivel es súper alto, todos lo estamos haciendo muy bien, hay un par de diez y scores muy altos, creo que es uno de los eventos que más high scores he visto en toda mi vida. Estoy súper contento y motivado para mañana, para seguir dando el cien por cien. La isla es increíble, es la jungla, uno de los sitios más bonitos que he ido, la naturaleza está por todos lados. Esperemos que se siga haciendo el evento para regresar.”

THE HAWAIIAN JOSHUA MONIZ HAS WON THE FIRST MARTINIQUE SURF PRO

On Saturday 25th April, the final day of the Martinique Surf Pro was certainly not lacking in suspense. As hoped for, the two semi-finals and the grand final were of a very high standard offering some thrilling contests at the surf spot at Basse-Pointe. In the end, the Hawaiian Joshua Moniz (18 years old) won the only Caribbean leg in the World Surf League Qualification Series (QS) in 2015. In magnificent conditions watched by an enthusiastic crowd, he won the final where ha was up against the South African, Michael February (21 years old). The Peruvian, Miguel Tudela (20 years old) and the Australian, Cooper Chapman (20 years old) shared third place. Thanks to their great performances in a QS3000 event, these four young surfers will leap up the rankings in the World Surf League Qualification Series.

As everyone had hoped, the Martinique Surf Pro offered us a remarkable final on the waves at Basse-Pointe, a surf spot that is now known by surfers all around the world. On Stauday morning, four surfers were still in contention at this brand new event on Martinique: Joshua Moniz, Michael February, Miguel Tudela and Cooper Chapman. These four young surfers aged between 18 and 21, made the most of the favourable conditions to please the many spectators, who had come to Basse-Pointe.

Exciting semi-finals
The first semi final was launched at 1030hrs local time and opposed the Peruvian, Miguel Tudela and the South African, Michael February in a heat lasting 35 minutes. With waves taking time to appear, both surfers had to show they knew how to remain patient. In these strategic conditions, Tudela and February still managed to achieve very decent scores. In the lead with just a few seconds to go in this first semi-final, Miguel Tudela thought he had it in the bag, but Michael February was not going to give in that easily. Showing determination, the South African, took the final wave that came his way staking all on this last chance. It paid off as he managed to do a very strong air reverse, a complicated move, which enabled him to overtake his rival by the smallest of margins. 14.80 points to 14.63 points for his opponent, Miguel Tudela, who was obviously very disappointed by this incredible ending.

The spectators hardly had the time to get over their excitement and the second semi-final was already underway. Once again, this would last 35 minutes and saw the Australian, Cooper Chapman up against the Hawaiian, Joshua Moniz. This was the third time these two had met in this Martinique Surf Pro, as they had already done battle in the series with four competitors in the third and fifth rounds (each scored one win). In this semi-final, Chapman and Moniz gave as good as they got, achieving some very good scores. Once again, it was all decided in the last few seconds. Cooper Chapman took the lead on the final wave, but Joshua Moniz who set off on the next wave overtook him with a score of 8.47 points. In the end, there was hardly anything between them: 17.80 points to 17.46 points. Eliminated before the final, Miguel Tudela and Cooper Chapman can console themselves knowing that they have both earned 1680 points in the Qualification Series.

A world class final
It was at 1230hrs that the Grand Final of the Martinique Surf Pro got underway between Michael February and Joshua Moniz. It was no surprise that these two excellent surfers achieved some remarkable performances with several waves of eight points or more. During the 40 minutes of the final, Moniz and February each took eight waves. With a 9.07 and an 8.87, Joshua Moniz set the bar very high. Michael February needed to achieve two incredible scores to move ahead. With an 8.57 and a 7.53, he did not manage to reach the 17.94 total set by his Hawiian rival. So it was Joshua Moniz who won this final series and the Martinique Surf Pro. By achieving this first win, he pockets 3000 points in the Qualification Series, which is far from being insignificant. Still a member of the Junior Tour and so a novice in the QS, Joshua Moniz was 160th in the QS before this event in Martinique. Thanks to this win, he will leap up the rankings, as will Michael February, who will be leaving Martinique with 2250 points. This will certainly see him jump up from his 77th place in the 2015 QS. These moves prove that there is a lot at stake in the Martinique Surf Pro, a QS 3000 event.

Even with the smallest it’s like a perfect little point, and I hope it continues. It’s crazy because in every heat guys were losing like with 16 / 17 points and that’s pretty rare to have in a contest. I know Michael is super experienced, I have watched a lot of his surfing and he surfs so well, so I was super nervous going into the heat and I knew he was capable of getting very high scores.”

Michael February (South Africa, 21 years old), finalist at the 2015 Martinique Surf Pro: “I got some good scores in the final, but unfortunately they weren’t enough. At this stage in the competition, you really need to surf well and Joshua Moniz was very consistent. This second place is a good result, the best I have got so far, so I’m pleased with that. I had said to myself that the quarter finals would be a good result in terms of the number of points, so getting to the final is fantastic. Yesterday, (Friday) I got a ten, and that was good for my confidence.”

Facts and figures
– 106 surfers from five continents have competed in this first MARTINIQUE SURF PRO at the surf spot at Basse-Pointe in the north-east of the island. This brand new event on Martinique is the only Caribbean leg in the World Surf Qualifying Series in 2015. Joshua Moniz, the winner of the event earned 3000 points in the Qualification Series (QS).

– 4 surfers remained in the competition before the semi-finals and the Grand Final, which took place today (Saturday): the Hawiian, Joshua Moniz (18 years old), the South African, Michael February (21 years old), the Peruvian, Miguel Tudela (20 years old) and the Australian, Cooper Chapman (20 years old).

– 4 Frenchmen (from the mainland and the overseas territories) made it to the fourth round: Andy Crière from Hendaye, Timothée Bisso from Guadeloupe, Steven Pierson from Tahiti and Dimitri Ouvre from St. Barts. They were all eliminated on Friday.
