La categoría Open Hombres completa 24 Series frente a miles de personas en Playa Jacó

El INS ISA World Surfing Games 2016 tuvo un explosivo arranque en el primer día de competencia en Playa Jaco, Costa Rica, luego de que los hombres competidores de los 26 Equipos Nacionales de Surf mostraron su surfing de alto desempeño.

El grupo de 96 hombres completaron un maratónico día de 24 series en condiciones difíciles, con olas de 2 a 4 pies, y con miles de espectadores presenciando la competencia de clase mundial y dando apoyo a sus naciones.

Las banderas nacionales llenaron la playa y los cantos nacionales resonaron conforme los países apoyaban a sus atletas en el agua.

El equipo local, Costa Rica, no decepcionó al público que llegó a apoyarlos. Todos los cuatro atletas pasaron las series de Ronda 1 y fueron felicitados al salir del agua por un enjambre de fanáticos. Carlos Muñoz lideró el fuerte grupo del Equipo de Costa Rica, surfeando las complicadas condiciones del beach break de Playa Jacó con habilidad y anotando un total de 16.83.

Guilherme Fonseca, de Portugal, quién se llevó el primer puesto en la cuarta serie en la mañana, con un total 13.04, comentó acerca de su experiencia en este Campeonato Mundial ISA en Costa Rica.

“Me siento muy orgulloso de representar a mi país y a mi gente. Costa Rica es un lugar tan hermoso. Mi plan es simplemente continuar avanzando y divertirme. Me siento muy confiado con mi surfing así que estoy esperando grandes cosas esta semana”.

El Presidente de la ISA, Fernando Aguerre, quien actualmente está en Río para los Juegos Olímpicos 2016 luego de la decisión del Comité Olímpico Internacional, a inicios de esta semana, de incluir el Surfing en los Juegos Olímpicos Tokio 2020, habló acerca de la acción.

“¡Qué increíble inicio de competencia! Estoy particularmente impresionado por el entusiasmo de los miles de fanáticos locales costarricenses que llegaron. Apoyaron a sus surfistas y mostraron el máximo respeto y deportivismo a las naciones visitantes a lo largo de todo el día de competencia”.

“Mientras miraba las banderas nacionales de cada país presente allá en Jacó, pensé en el futuro de nuestro deporte en el escenario deportivo más grande del mundo, los Juegos Olímpicos. En 2020 muchos de estos atletas tendrán la oportunidad de izar sus banderas otra vez en Tokio”.

Debido al formato único de los Campeonatos Mundiales ISA, nadie ha quedado eliminado aún de la competencia. Los que finalizaron en tercero y cuarto lugar en sus series cayeron a las rondas de Repechaje, donde les queda una segunda oportunidad de competir. Sin embargo, perder en el Repechaje, significa la eliminación.

Los que finalizaron en primero y segundo lugar, continuarán a la Ronda 2 del Evento Principal.

Surfline, pronosticador oficial del evento, indica que el swell del Suroeste se mantendrá durante el Día 2 de la competición, entregando suficientes olas para competir. Más adelante del periodo de competencia, un nuevo oleaje llegará para el miércoles 9 de agosto, y mostrará más tamaño para el jueves 10 de agosto.

Men complete 24 heats in front of thousands at Playa Jacó

The 2016 INS ISA World Surfing Games got off to an explosive start on the first day of competition at Playa Jacó, Costa Rica as the Open Men competitors from the 26 National Surfing Teams put their high performance surfing on display.

The field of 96 men completed a marathon day of 24 heats in tricky, 2-4 foot surf with thousands of spectators present to witness the world-class competition and support their nations. National flags littered the beach and national chants rung out as the countries supported their athletes in the water.

The local Team Costa Rica did not disappoint the crowd who came out to provide support, as all four male athletes passed through their Round 1 heats and were greeted by swarms of fans as they came out of the water. Carlos Muñoz led the strong charge for Team Costa Rica, navigating the tricky, beach-break conditions with expertise and notching a heat score of 16.83.

Portugal’s Guilherme Fonseca, who took first place in the fourth heat of the morning with a total of 13.04, commented on his experience at the ISA World Championship in Costa Rica.

“I feel really proud to represent my country and my people. Costa Rica is such a beautiful place and my plan is to just keep going and having fun. I am feeling really confident with my surfing so I am expecting great things this week.”

ISA President Fernando Aguerre, is currently in Rio attending the 2016 Olympic Games following the International Olympic Committee’s decision earlier in the week to include Surfing in the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.  He followed the competitions on the webcast and spoke about the start of the action.

“What an amazing start to the competition! I was particularly impressed by the enthusiasm from the local Costa Rican surfing fans who numbered well into the thousands. They supported their surfers all day long and showed the utmost respect and sportsmanship for the visiting nations throughout the whole day of competition.

“As I watched the national flags of each country present in Jacó, I had glimpses of the future of our sport on the world’s greatest sporting stage, the Olympics. In 2020 many of these athletes will have the chance to raise their flags again in Tokyo.”

Due to the unique format of ISA World Championships, no one has been eliminated yet from the competition. Those that received 3rd and 4th in their heats will fall to the Repechage Round where they have a second chance to compete. However, a Repechage loss leads to elimination. Those that received 1st and 2nd continue through to Round 2 of the Main Event.

Surfline, the event’s official forecaster, predicts the Southwest swell mix to hold on day 2 of competition, providing plenty of contestable surf. Looking ahead in the contest period, a new swell is set to fill in on Wednesday, August 9, and show more size on Thursday, August 10.
